Taking a statistics class? Maybe you are just interested in where all those numbers and percentages come from. Well, statistics is the branch of mathematics that creates all those figures you see in newspapers and on the news. Statistics is the study of data: its collection, organization, analysis, and illustration. Data is collected in one of two ways: a survey or an experiment. When students first learn about statistics, they learn the very basic functions of statistics, its uses, and why statistics is important. They learn about the many ways that statistics can be presented, for example bar graphs, pie charts, histograms and scatter plots to name a few. After students become acquainted with various representations, they learn about the measures of central tendency, such as quartiles, percentiles, various means, median, and mode. As students become comfortable with these mathematical concepts, they will be introduced to measures of dispersion, for example range, standard deviation, variance and skewness. Students also learn about the two types of statistics: descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. In descriptive statistics, statisticians use the data to summarize findings using many of the measures of central tendency. In inferential statistics, statisticians analyze the data, look for trends of correlation and utilize measures of dispersion to account for randomness to draw conclusions. Whether you are taking a basic of advanced statistics course, our statistics tutors can answer any and all questions you have. So call our consultants to find a statistics tutor near you today.
