Algebra 1 is taught to students in middle school, either in the seventh or eighth grade. Students begin by working with fractions (regular factions, improper fractions and mixed numbers) and decimals. With both, they learn to add, subtract, multiply and divide. They also learn how to use fractions and decimals interchangeably. After students get comfortable with using non-integer numbers, they are introduced to the order of operations, which dictates how a student should solve an equation step by step. Factoring and distributing are also properties that students learn and add to their understandings of how to solve for unknown variables in complex equations. As factoring and distributing are opposite operations of each other, students learn how to expand equations as well as simplyf them through solving for unknown variables. As students become comfortable with solving for unknowns, they also learn how to work with basic exponents and roots. When adding these two forms into equations, students are able to see the differences in graphical representations of equations with different powers (e.g. linear equations are lines and quadratic equations are parabolas). Through repetition, students learn to recognize the type of function and graph that an equation will create when plotted out.
