Pre-Calculus is a mathematics subject that comprises algebra and trigonometry, necessary tools in order to attack calculus successfully. Students are introduced to a variety of new topics that include real and complex numbers, inequalities in equations, many types of functions, trignometric identities, vectors, parametric equations, conic sections, matricies, polar coordinates, and limits. It should be noted that some of these topics may be covered only in "Honors" Pre-Calculus classes versus general Pre-Calculus classes. Understanding the fundamentals of functions is key to success in Pre-Calculus. Learning to identify the different types of functions (e.g. composite functions, rational functions, exponential functions, logarithmic functions) will help a student not only evaluate how to manipulate the expression, but also identify what kind of graph she will be drawing on a 4-quadrant Cartesian plane. Trigonometry and trigonometric functions can be tricky at first, but once a student learns the basic trig identities, graphical forms, and SOH-CAH-TOA (rules for triangles), then a student can successfully work through and evaluate equations involving sine, cosine, tangent and any inverse. Pre-calculus also introduced working in a 3 plane coordinate system, utlitzing the x, y, and z axes. Concepts involving space and magnitude in the three-plane system include vectors (lines that have direction), parametric equations (functions that create a shape in motion), and polar coordinates (coordinates that work with angles instead of integers for points). These concepts form a fundamental basis for 3-D modeling in more advanced mathematics.
