High school English focuses on the analysis and interpretation of literature and the development of the use of language to express ideas.  Beginning in middle school and continuing into later years, students learn the basics of essay writing, beginning with the outline of an essay and the construction of a thesis statement.  An English tutor can be very helpful at this stage because the transition from book report writing to more complex forms of written expression is challenging, and the fundamental skills learned at this point will be important for all future writing. To complement their developing literary skills, students study vocabulary and rules of grammar.  They also learn to identify literary elements like setting, theme, and point of view and literary devices such as allusion, metaphor, and irony.  By the third year of high school, students are expected to be adept at incorporating the discussion of these elements into their own literary analysis.  They should also be able to present their ideas in expository, argumentative, and comparison essays.  Early 20th century novels such as The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, both set in New York City, are commonly the focus of this year.  The senior year typically introduces students to classic literature from all over the world.  By this time students are expected to be comfortable reading and interpreting various forms of literature such as fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and essays. Emphasis is placed on writing formal essays, sophisticated prose, and presenting ideas orally.  For particularly strong students, many high schools offer advanced placement classes in Literature and Composition and Language and Composition.
