Algebra is an area of mathematics where symbols or items other than numbers are used in calculations similar to arithmetics. The Arabic root of the word is "al-jabr," meaning restoration. This "restoration" refers to when an equation with two sides has a manipulation done to one side, the other must have an equivalent manipulation in order to be "restored." This early use of algorithms, or mixed numerical and symbolic systems, began with the Babylonians of Mesopotamia, 1000 BC. At the time, Egyptians and Greeks were still using geometric methods to answer the same problems. Though the Egyptian mathematician Al-Khwarizmi (namesake of algorithm) in his book The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing definitively isolated Algebra as an original calculation system. Now, middle school and high school students around the world wrestle with the concept of using a symbol to represent a numerical value that is undetermined within an arithmetic equation. Algebra is the foundation on which Calculus and higher math disciplines are based. Because of this foundational nature, Algebra is featured in nearly every standardized exam which contains a mathematics section. So it might be a good idea to bone up now. Don't you think? Using Algerbraic equations, we can represent a line, curve, or any shape that occurs in the universe through numbers. Pretty cool, eh?
