For many of us, the subject of chemistry instantly conjures up images of a mad scientist, clad in a white coat, plotting in his clandestine laboratory of test tubes and ager plates. While a somewhat exaggerated image of classic folklore, this archetype is based on a grain of truth: understanding the properties of matter, its composition, and how it behaves in various conditions can lend one a tremendous amount of power. In many respects, Chemistry is the brain of all sciences: it involves the biggest cross over of all the other natural sciences, including biology, physics, geology; matter is everywhere, and therefore, knowing how to manipulate it can lead to various technological innovations. For example, the Aerospace industry relies heavily on basic principles of chemistry in order to come up with strong composites that keep aircraft relatively lightweight, without compromising structural integrity. According to Boeing, in place of the traditional aluminum body, nearly 50 percent of its newest airliner, the 787 Dreamliner, is composed of composites and polymers. The reduction in drag greatly increases fuel efficiency; the chemical composition of all composite components increases resistance to corrosion and fatigue, thus improving overall safety. Chemistry also plays a very pivotal role in many of the foods that we consume. There is in fact a branch science devoted entirely to the study of the molecular composition of food. This discipline is largely responsible for the concept of shelf life, preservatives, canned food, and the natural and artificial flavoring in the dishes found at many of your favorite restaurants. Skiing and snowboarding gear has greatly improved in the last 10 years due to our increased understanding of waterproofing, and plastics--another direct result of someone working in a lab toward something other than world takeover. Only certain combinations of plastics can resist water while allowing ventilation simultaneously.
