The GRE is a standardized entrance exam required for prospective students applying to graduate programs. The test is designed to assess a student's aptitude in a variety of skills to ascertain how ready a student is to pursue graduate level work. The test contains four different subject areas: analytical writing, verbal, mathematical and an experimental section. There are six sections to the test, and all are taken on a computer. Unlike other standardized tests that are paper based or even computer based, the GRE is a computer-adaptive standardized test, meaning as you score more accurately on the GRE, questions will get harder, and vice versa. So it is very important to prepare for the exam. Also, a GRE score is good for five years. There are six sections to the test: two verbal, two math, one writing and one experimental. The writing section is the only non multiple choice section and requires students to write two essays: one that asks a student's opinion on an issue, and the other that critiques an argument. The verbal sections will test reading comprehension, critical reasoning and vocabulary. The mathematics sections cover topics of arithmetic, algebra, geometry and trigonometry. The experimental section will look identical to the other multiple choice sections so it is in a student's best interest to treat all sections seriously.
