About Me

I tutor all levels of Computer Science, the Russian Language, Mathematics, Physics and Philosophy. I am comfortable tutoring all ages.

I started out by teaching Artificial Intelligence to a group of high school students who already knew some computer science. Since then I've taught programming (C, Ruby on Rails, Python, Javascript, Java) to people who were already working in the tech industry but were looking to improve their career options.

Most recently, I have been tutoring Berkeley and SFSU students in introductory computer science and mathematics courses. I found that even very bright people need help when it comes to learning the foundations of a new topic. This is because they believe that the right way to learn is by memorizing facts, and their instructors do not disabuse them of that notion. When it comes to the basics, it is almost never about memorizing, but about slowly and carefully learning a new way of thinking via practice. I ensure that my students know this, and our sessions are as much about practicing correct thought processes as they are about the subject matter.

"Yuri helped me with my Introduction to Java class. He is quite knowledgeable in his field and is a great tutor - instead giving me answers directly, or forcing me to memorize, we concentrated on the basics and made sure that I knew how to apply them. A+"

Yuri has asked for my recommendation and I 'm happy to give it. He knows both ruby and rails very well and he is a good teacher. He also understands the various idioms of the language ecosystem and he is good at problem solving and explanation.
