By 1915, the headquarters for the Alaska Railroad were built in Anchorage. Over 2,000 people flocked to the area, as did many entrepreneurs. Because Anchorage was less than 100 miles away, the city had hundreds of millions of dollars in damage. The city was reborn due to revenue from oil and plans for beautification. As of today, tourism plays a critical role in the development of the city. As of the 2010 census, there were 291,826 citizens in Anchorage.
