Europeans first settled Arlington in the 1840s after a battle between Edward H. Tarrant and Village Creek Native Americans. After Tarrant won, agriculture industries, cotton ginning, trading posts, and farms were established. Less than 30 years later, the railroad came through Arlington, which brought more people. By 1910, the city had water, electricity, natural gas, and telephone services as well as a public school system. All of this made the population swell to over 4,000 before WWII. What has helped Arlington grow during the 1950s and 1990s was large-scale industrialization. As of the 2010 census, there were 365,438 people living in Arlington.
