History

Augusta, Georgia is a city rich in American history. First settled in 1735 and named after Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, the city served as the capital of Georgia from 1785 until 1795. It still has many historical structures standing, including the only building ever built by the Confederate States of America, the Confederate Powderworks. In addition to the Powderworks is the home of Woodrow Wilson, 28th President of the United States, Ezekiel Harris, and George Walton. In addition to the historical buildings, Augusta has many historical neighborhoods, nine of which are listed on the National Register of Historical Places. But Augusta may be most famous for hosting the Masters Golf Tournament every April.
