History

A handful of families colonized Bakersfield in 1858. They were searching for homeland and not gold, as most westward travelers wanted. In just over a decade, the city was formally planned, and by 1870, there was a telegraph office, two stores, a newspaper, two boarding houses, one doctor, a wagon shop, a harness shop, one attorney, a saloon, and a school. This city is marked by growth. Even today, it's growing. As of the 2010 census, there were 347,483 citizens living in the metropolis.
