Baton Rouge was founded in 1719 as a French military post, however France did not control the area for very long. By the mid-1700's, the British took control of the land. This city became Louisiana's capital in 1849. Baton Rouge grew because of the steamboat, although with the Civil War, economic growth was halted. In one the longest battles of American history, 6,000 Confederate troops were defeated by the Union in August 1862.
With WWII, Standard Oil Company (which was founded in 1909) helped the war effort by increasing petrochemical production, which lured people to settle here. Another rise of petrochemical production happened in the 50's and 60's. Now, there's a building boom, which is helping the city grow even more.
