Overview of Billings

Billings, Montana is only 160 miles north of Yellowstone National Park and 450 miles from Denver. It is in Big Sky country and is a major regional hub. The town was founded by the Northen Pacific Railroad in 1882 and named after the company president at the time. Between the railroad and good land for homesteading, the population grew rapidly and Billings was incorporated only three years later. Sugar beet became a major local crop and in 1906 a refinery was built in the town. The area attracted immigrants seeking farm employment, with the highest proportion being Russians and Germans that, by 1940, constituted a third of the city's population.
