History

Bridgeport is the highest populated city in Connecticut. P.T. Barnum built three houses in the city and wintered his circus there. Bridgeport was a small fishing and farming village. During the American Revolution, it was a center of privateering. Bridgeport saw a boom of shipbuilding and whaling in the mid-1800s, especially after the railroad arrived in 1840. The city rapidly industrialized by the turn of the last century, producing goods such as the famous Bridgeport milling machine, brass fittings, carriage, sewing machines, brassieres, saddles, and ammunition. By 1930, Bridgeport was a thriving industrial center with more than 500 factories. The build-up to World War II also helped its industries, but the restructuring of heavy industry caused the loss of thousands of jobs and residents by the 1970s and 1980s. Bridgeport has had several redevelopment projects; making use of federal stimulus funds, the Bridgeport Housing Authority and a local health center announced plans in 2010 to build a $20 million medical and housing complex. Bridgeport has 130,000 residents with more than 60 languages spoken.
