History

Buffalo, was named after the creek that runs through the area; however, where the creek got its name is unclear. Long before the French colonized the area, a tribe of Iroquois's lived here and these Indians helped in mediation between the Europeans and other tribes.

After the French and Indian War ended, Britain controlled Buffalo. However, there weren't any permanent settlers until 1789 when the Dutch bought the area from the Seneca Indians. During the War of 1812, Britain recaptured Buffalo. Slowly, this city became an important city of the Underground Railroad and many runaway slaves came through Buffalo on their way to freedom.

Although at the turn of the century, Buffalo was a growing city both in population and economics, the city's importance declined in the mid-1900's when the St. Lawrence Seaway opened, which meant produce and goods could reach the ocean via the St. Lawrence River. During this time, there was a suburban migration. Things continued to decline until the early 2000's, but with help, things have improved and now there are over 261,310 citizens.
