The history of Chandler begins later than usual. The first veterinary surgeon of the territory of Arizona, Dr. Alexander John Chandler, bought 80 acres of land in 1891. While there, he helped revolutionize irrigation methods. He kept buying land until he owned 18,000 acres, which he sold to farmers. By 1912, trains were coming through the area, which consisted of three buildings and a billboard for Hotel San Marcos (which opened in 1913).
The hotel brought much money to the city, but agriculture brought more. The cash crops of the area were grains, cotton, and alfalfa. Livestock (including ostriches) was also a big business. Nearby during WWI, the Goodyear Tire Company built a factory, which drew more people. By 1920, there were over 1,000 residents and the roads and sewage systems were improved. Even though times were hard during the Great Depression, things improved in 1941 when a fighter pilot training base was built east Chandler. Two months after opening, Pearl Harbor was attacked, Chandler became a military town, and the population reached 3,800 in 1950. The economy has continued to stay strong and population has continued to grow. As of the 2010 census, there are 236,123 people.
