The city of Charlotte was founded in 1755 and was named after Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who was the wife of King George III of Britain. Today Charlotte is the largest city in the state of North Carolina and is the seventeenth largest city in the United States. The economy of Charlotte is driven by banking and finance and has become the second biggest banking center in the United States after New York City.
