History

The first Europeans to visit Chula Vista were the Spanish in 1542 and by 1795 the Spaniards owned the land. Until 1845, Chula Vista was used as grazing land for livestock. In this year, John Forster was given the land, which he later sold to the French, who later sold it to the Kimball brothers.

By 1911, after an election, Chula Vista was incorporated into the state. In 1911 and then 1913-1916, terrible weather damaged the crops. Prior to WWI, processing plants for kelp (which was perfect for making explosives) were built. And then, after the war and during the Great Depression, the lemon crop improved and celery became an important crop.

Life changed in Chula Vista in 1941. During WWII, the Rohr Aircraft Corporation relocated to this city. Because of this company, the population tripled between 1940 and 1950. The population continues to grow to this day. As of the 2010 census, there are 243,916 citizens.
