History

Clarksville is the fifth largest city in the state of Tennessee and the county seat of Montgomery County. The city was incorporated in 1785. It was named for General George Rogers Clark, a revolutionary hero and the brother of William Clark. It is one of the south's most historic cities. An important United States air base, Fort Campbell, is located nearby and the area's economy and culture is strongly centered on the military. Fort Campbell is the city's largest employer. Outdoor recreation is a popular draw, and the area is well known for its excellent rock climbing. The Clarksville City Arboretum contains over 30 species of trees. The City of Clarksville was recently recognized by Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation as a 'Walk with Me Tennessee' Community. Cumberland RiverWalk is a two mile riverfront promenade with a playground and picnic area. It features a river exhibit and concert area and many summertime festivals are held there. The Liberty Park Clarksville Marina is presently under renovation.
