History

Cleveland's history dates back to the late 1700s when Connecticut Land Company bought the land and General Moses Cleaveland surveyed the area. The population grew with the completion of the Erie Canal in the 1820s, and then it grew again in the 1850s due to the railroads. Coal and iron ore were found, and those deposits drew businesses. The city continues to grow steadily with the years. As of the 2010 census, there are 396,815 people living in Cleveland.
