The history of Corpus Christi dates all the way back to 1519, when Alonzo Alvarez de Pineda discovered the land, and gave the area the name we know today. However, it wasn't until 1829 that there was any sort of settlement. Prior to the colonization of the area, the indigenous peoples had left. By 1847, the settlement was large enough to be called a city and the name 'Corpus Christi' was kept.
The growth of this area was slow. There were only 175 people in the area in 1860. Even though it was small, the people decided to secede from the United States and joined the Confederate States of America.
The 20th century was marked by many changes. In 1926, the Port of Corpus Christi opened. The Naval Air Station of Corpus Christi then opened in 1941. Finally, Harbor Bridge opened in 1959. All of these things helped the city grow. As of the 2010 census, there were 305,215 residents.
