Detroit was founded in 1701 by French Canadians who named the city Fort Ponchartrain du Detroit after the French word detroit which means strait. The strait in this regard refers to the Detroit River. Today Detroit is the largest city in the state of Michigan and is the eighteenth most populated city in the United States. The economy of Detroit has been driven by the automotive industry, as General Motors, Ford and Chrysler all make Detroit the home of their corporate headquarters.
