History

Europeans settled in Durham in 1701. These people fought for independence in 1771, when the Loyalist militia created a road through Durham to quell the ÔWar of Regulators'. In 1775, William Johnston helped Daniel Boone go west.

Between the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, many plantations sprang up. It became a conglomeration of enslaved and freed African-Americans. Many of the free people fought in the Civil War. While North Carolina was the last to secede from the Union, Durham witnessed the last Civil War battle.

In post-Civil War Durham, life prospered. Tobacco, denim, and hosiery corporations were built. In 1887, Trinity College (later called Duke) moved to Durham. In 1910, the first publicly supported liberal arts college for African-Americans (North Carolina Central University) was built.

Durham has been important to the Civil Rights movement. Many leaders, like Reverend Douglas Moore, held sit-ins in the 1950's in Durham (the first ones in the country). Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. even coined 'Fill up the jails' in Durham.

In the recent decades, many things have been created here including Astroturf¨ and AZT. Bayer, IBM, and nearly 140 other research and development companies are in Durham. With development growth, comes population growth. As of 2010, there are 228,330 citizens.
