History

Fort Collins was founded as a Civil War military post in 1864 to protect the Overland Trail mail route. Stone quarrying, sugar beet farming, and sheep-raising were among the area's earliest industries. Its population began to expand after World War II and growth spread southward with development that included several regional malls. Fort Collins is the most populous city of Larimer County and the fourth most populous city in Colorado.
