History

Fort Wayne is all about growth. This city received its name from the American fort that was built upon this land in 1784. However, Americans weren't the first colonizers in this land. Both the French and the Indians settled prior to Americans building here. This city was attractive to early pioneers because Fort Wayne was a major fur-trading hub. In the next 40 years, elections for public office were held, businesses were built, and in 1831, the first courthouse was constructed. The area was further developed when the Wabash & Erie Canal was finished in the 1830's. These canals brought more economic possibilities, thus there was a major immigration flux. Again, the population soared when the first railroads came through the area.

This growth continued well into the 20th century. Businesses (especially in retail) and people flocked to this area. Even during the Great Depression Fort Wayne prospered and has continued to this day. As of the 2010 census, there are 253,691 citizens living in Fort Wayne.
