History

Nicknamed 'Furniture City,' Grand Rapids, Michigan is home to five of the world's top furniture manufacturers. It's also a hotbed for the arts and culture. In 1969, Alexander Calder's abstract sculpture, La Grande Vitesse, which translates from French as "grand rapids," was installed downtown on the Vandenberg Plaza. It became the very first federally funded work of public art in the United States, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1973, the city hosted Sculpture Off the Pedestal, an outdoor exhibition of public sculpture, which assembled 13 world-renowned artists in a single, citywide celebration. In 2004, the Grand Rapids Art Museum began construction on a new, larger building for its art museum collection, which opened in 2007. The new building site faces downtown's 'Ecliptic' by Maya Lin at Rosa Parks Circle. The museum became the first newly built art museum to achieve gold-level, LEED certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. ArtPrize, the world's largest art competition completely voted on by the public, also take place in Grand Rapids.
