History

The first inhabitants of the Greensboro area were the Saura and Keyauwee Native Americans. However, Germans, Welsh and English Quakers, and Scotch-Irish also visited the land, but stayed temporarily. In 1740, the first permanent settlement was constructed.

The people of Greensboro helped defeat the British Army during the American Revolution. Nearly 4,500 men dispatched to prevent an invasion. These men fought in three battles and eventually defeated the redcoats.

In post-Revolutionary War life, the residents decided to rework the city so that it could work more efficiently. Indeed, the reworked city was efficient. The city grew in both population and economics (and it still is growing). As of the 2010 census, there were 269,666 residents of Greensboro.
