History

Since the 11th century, people have lived in Honolulu. It took nearly 500 years for foreigners to visit. The first man to land here was the British Captain William Brown. Soon, more ships followed and this area soon became a port for travelers sailing between North America and Asia.

Between the late 1800s and present day, much has happened. The Hawaiian monarchy was overthrown in 1893. Then, in 1898, the city was annexed by the United States. Forty-three years later, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, thus bringing the U.S. into WWII.

Due to Honolulu being an important sea- and air- port, this area has grown economically and in population. Tourism has also brought in revenue. As of the 2010 census, there were 953,207 citizens.
