History

The first person to visit Jersey City was Henry Hudson in 1609 and by 1623 the Dutch West India Company held control over this area. A decade later, the first houses were built, but there was trouble. The Lenape Indians raided the colony and the relationship between the Dutch and Native Americans deteriorated due to misunderstandings and mismanagement. These raids led to the Kieft War in 1643, when 80 Indians were killed.

After the war, the population grew. In the 19th century alone, 60,000 runaway slaves reached Jersey City. The city also grew economically. Jersey City became a hub for manufacturing and dock during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. However, by the mid and late 1900's, the population and economics dropped considerably. With governmental help, the city has grown again and as of the 2010 census, there are 247,597citizens.
