The city of Joliet was named for the French Canadian explorer Louis Joliet, who in 1673, along with Father Jacques Marquette, paddled up the Des Plaines River and camped on a huge mound on the edge of town, overlooking Joliet, which was named Mound Jolliet. Joliet was incorporated as a city in 1852. The city is the fourth most populated in Illinois and is located 40 miles from Chicago. It is a 'young' city with a median resident age of 31 years. Some of the main attractions in the city are Harrah's Casino and Hotel, Silver Cross Field (baseball), Hollywood Casino, and Rialto Square Theatre, one of the world's most beautiful theatres.
Like many Midwestern cities dependent on manufacturing industries, Joliet has undergone past economic difficulties. Joliet's nearness to Chicago has provided some employment as the city evolves from a steel-town to a commuter town with a family friendly atmosphere and strong work ethic, which is a favorable environment for tutoring jobs. The downtown area is undergoing a total revitalization due to the people's volunteer spirit and civic pride. Teaching jobs in Joliet include three high schools: Joliet Central High School, Joliet West High School and Joliet Catholic Academy. Joliet Junior College, founded in 1901, and the University of St. Francis, a small Midwestern Catholic undergraduate school offers both teaching jobs and tutoring jobs.
Rasmussen College, which offers teaching jobs for online degrees in six education areas focused on the areas with the greatest employment opportunities. The Joliet/Romeoville Campus is the third Rasmussen College campus to open in Illinois. Tutoring jobs are to be found through the Joliet Public Library in the City Center, which has expanded in recent years to include a 36,000 square foot branch library.
