History

Lakewood is a new town west of Denver incorporated as recently as 1969, although it's development started in 1889, after W.A.H. Loveland, the former president of the Colorado Central Railroad, retired to the community after living in nearby Golden. Lakewood is the 172nd most populous city in the U.S. Lakewood has extreme swings in temperature, with cold, snowy winters and hot summers, and high temperatures in the day and very low at night. Rain comes mainly in the spring and summer. Lakewood's largest employers are government entities Ð the Denver Federal Center and the Jefferson County R-1 school district.
