Las Vegas: A Desert for a Classroom

The history of modern Las Vegas begins in 1829, when Rafael Rivera settled the area. Seeing the foliage, he named it Las Vegas, which means "The Meadows” in Spanish. By 1864, Nevada became the thirty-sixth state. The mining industry came to town when minerals and metals were discovered. The railway came in the 1900's, which helped the population flourish. Even with the Great Depression, Las Vegas prospered, the Hoover Dam was constructed, and gambling was legalized. In 1935, Nellis Air Force Base was built and the defense industry came to town. After World War II, casinos and lavish resorts sprang up, bringing tourism, which continues today. The city continues to grow. As of 2010, there were 583,756 citizens. 137,022 of these citizens are school-aged, so there should be a teaching or tutoring job. Listed on Simply Hired are 1,408 jobs within fifteen miles of the city and 918 positions within it.
