History

In 1775, Lexington was founded in what was then called Virginia, but there was no lasting settlement until 1779. Native American attacks prior to then prevented anything permanent. Soon, 26 people arrived and built a blockhouse, cabins, and stockade. By 1820, this town was one of the largest and wealthiest areas west of the Allegheny Mountains. In 1833, 500 of the 7,000 residents died from the cholera epidemics. There were other outbreaks from 1848 to 1850, which caused many of the wealthier people to flee Lexington. By the 1850s, slavery had reached Lexington. One fifth of the state's population was enslaved. However, Lexington also had the highest population of free African Americans. Twentieth century Lexington was marked by the construction of the first alcohol and drug rehabilitation clinic. It was later converted into a prison. As of the 2006 census, there were 270,789 citizens in the city.
