History

Lincoln was founded in 1856, but was called Lancaster and was originally populated by many Native American tribes. After Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, Nebraska put in a bid to change the name because they didn't want this area to become the capital. The citizens thought that legislature wouldn't make their city Nebraska's capital if it was named after the President. Their idea didn't work and in 1867, Lincoln became the capital.

Nebraska grew in population and economically in the 1890's, but during the Great Depression, many farm owners lost their lands due to the inability to pay off their mortgages and there was a slump in agriculture. It didn't last long though. In post-WWII society, agriculture grew as farming and dam building methods were improved. Even today, Nebraska is a hub of agriculture in the United States. As of the 2010 census, there are 258,379 citizens.
