Louisville received its name from Louis XVI and was founded by George Rogers Clark. Originally, the city was owned by the Virginia colony, but when shots were fired in 1775, the Kentucky citizens fought for statehood, which was won in 1780. Things prospered. The city grew, and was the site of the invention of chewing gum.
The year 1811 marked the arrival of steamboats. In 1830, the Portland Canal opened. Seven years later, James Guthrie broke ground on the University of Louisville as well as the Louisville & Nashville Railroad in 1859. With the Civil War, the Army of the Cumberland made their base in Louisville with William Tecumseh Sherman as their leader.
