History

James Duane Doty founded Madison in 1836 soon after the newly obtained Territory of Wisconsin. In that same year, Doty established a university and by 1838, the first territorial legislature was held. A decade later, Wisconsin became a state. With factories springing up in Madison by 1850 and the railroad arriving in 1854, the city continued to steadily develop. In 1860, Wisconsin opened its first mental institution in Madison.
