History

Mesquite is a small city located 12 miles outside of Dallas. The city was founded in 1873 by a Texas & Pacific Railway engineer who shrewdly purchased land along the line outside of Dallas. The city was incorporated in 1887 and established itself as an agricultural community. The town's economy began to shift after World War II. In 1970 the LBJ Freeway (I-635) connected Mesquite to the world and the population doubled over the next twenty years. Today's Mesquite, with a population of 139,824, offers all the amenities of a city with a small town feel. Over 18 parks, trails, and sports complexes are managed by the city and in 1995, the Mesquite Art Center opened its doors. The center offers a variety of theatre, music, visual arts, and literary programming.
