History

After Native Americans settled Miami, this area was colonized by the Spanish. The first European settlement was built in 1567. For hundreds of years, this land stayed a wilderness. While people wanted to build on it, but it was only in the late 1800's that any building was constructed. Even after the free of 1894 when many crops perished, Miami grew, especially when the railroad came to the city.

With the 1920's, came a short time of prosperity. However, with the hurricane of 1926 and the Great Depression, the economy of the area weakened. However, Miami was rejuvenated with the beginning of the United State's involvement with WWII. Because of their position on the coast, Miami played a crucial role in fighting the U-boats (German submarines). The city's population swelled to nearly 500,000 and when Cubans immigrated here, the population continued to boom. However, the population has decreased to 399,457 as of the 2010 census.
