Milwaukee: Metropolitan Learning

Due to its position on Lake Michigan, Milwaukee was faced with an early population boon. After a short civil war, 3 settlements joined together in 1846 to create the city. By the 1860's, this town was a major trader of grain, especially wheat. Soon came jobs in flour-milling, meat-packing, leather-tanning, and brewing. In the late 1800's, factories for steam engines, metal-bending, agricultural machinery, electrical equipment, mining shovels, and automobile frames sprung up through the city. With all of the economic opportunities, people from all over the world immigrated here. However, there was political corruption and crime. By 1910, things changed when Milwaukee was turned over to the Socialists. This revived the city's government. In the post-World War II era, Milwaukee dealt with poverty, job loss, and racial unrest. However, there's been much growth educationally. There are just over 1,600 positions 15-miles outside the city and 830 positions within Milwaukee – as posted on Simply Hired. There're many opportunities to find a tutoring or teaching job.
