History

In 1819, Minneapolis was founded as the home of Fort Snelling. This fort was the first major U.S. military presence in this area. At this time, the Saint Anthony Falls were tapped to power sawmills and flourmills. These two things helped increase the population. Soon after the settlement was built, a second village, Saint Anthony, was founded. By 1872, the two towns (Saint Anthony and Minneapolis) merged into one city and they kept the name Minneapolis.

Early Minneapolis looked towards sawmills for development. After awhile, the citizens of the city realized flourmills was a more profitable industry. Eventually, these mills lead to the construction of banks and the railroads coming through. After the area had fully developed technologically, the cultural aspect of the city grew. The construction of churches, art institutions, and the University of Minnesota all helped develop Minneapolis. This area is still a center for banking and industry. There is still growth. As of the 2010 census, there were 382,578 citizens in this city.
