History

The French founded New Orleans in 1718, but Spain bought it in the mid-1700s. By 1801, France was back in control. Two years later, Napoleon sold the land to the U.S. and then the population boomed. During the War of 1812, the British attempted to take New Orleans. However, Andrew Jackson foiled their plans on January 8, 1815.

New Orleans played a critical role in slavery because of its port. Although many slaves were traded here, New Orleans also had the largest and most prosperous community of freed slaves. During the Civil War, the Union captured the city, thus New Orleans wasn't damaged as badly as other cities. After the war, the railroad came through, causing a population and economy boom that lasted until the 2000s. In 2005, natural disasters wrecked havoc on the city. Hurricanes Katrina and Rite struck the city, causing many to perish and millions of dollars in damage. However, the city is again rebuilding, and there were 343,829 citizens in 2010.
