History

In 1666, Newark was founded by Robert Treat and the Puritans so that they could have a colony with strict religious rules. By trading ammunition, clothes, weapons, and household items with the Hackensack Native Americans, they received the land. The Puritans controlled the city until 1746, when the Episcopalians built their own church in Newark.

However, the 19th century was when the growth began. Leather was the primary industry. By 1870, 90% of the U.S.'s leather production was in Newark. Other things that helped Newark grow were the production of malleable iron, the construction of the Morris Canal, and the arrival of the railroad in the mid-1830s. The growth of the city continued well into the 20th century. However, from the Great Depression all the way through post-WWII, the economy of the area took a downturn because of increased tax rates, the construction of several highways, and the overbuilding of large housing projects. In recent decades, there has been a push to revitalize the city and rebuild the historic neighborhoods. As of 2010, there were 277,140 residents of Newark.
