History

Originally established as an agriculture and small fishing shire in 1634, Newport News has grown to be the fifth largest city in Virginia. In 1881, the city got into the ship building business and is today one of the largest shipyards and suppliers of navel ships in the country. Newport News also has a deep interest in research and education. The city is home to one of the most impressive maritime museums in the world, with over 350,000 artifacts, 2/3 of which are three-dimensional pieces recovered from sunken vessels. It is also home to the Peninsula Fine Arts Center. It houses a rotating collection of works and has hands-on section for kids. The city is deeply entrenched in the military, and therefore has a large number of military museums and exhibits that encompass all branches of the service.
