History

There's a determined attitude about this land. They've had to keep rebuilding. Norfolk was the center of the Tory forces during the Revolutionary War. In January of 1776, the whole settlement was torched. Of course, Norfolk rebuilt and the population grew. However, in 1804, a fire destroyed 300 buildings and the population declined. Things worsened with the Civil War, when the Union captured Norfolk in 1862. By the end of the war, the city was in ruins and there was no trade. And again, the city rebuilt.

WWI brought the Navy to Norfolk and the U.S. Naval Operating Base and Training Station was established. This city became the leader for Navy Recruitment. Because of the military and manufacturing plants being built, the population continued to grow. The economy of Norfolk declined in post-war Norfolk, but the population still climbed and then boomed during WWII when more soldiers and workers moved to the city. After WWII, the city has continued to grow and its economy has stayed strong. As of the 2010 census, there are 242,803 citizens.
