The Huchiun Indians were the first people to inhabit Oakland. It was during the Gold Rush of 1848 that this area had any non-indigenous settlers. In less than 20 years, the railroads arrived and soon Oakland was an important station. In 1868, the Oakland Long Wharf was built.
After the San Francisco earthquake and fire in 1906, the population doubled. It continued to grow during WWII, when war-related factories were built in this area. Many people stayed in Oakland after the war, even though the automobile and shipbuilding industries of the 1940's died off, thus there was a job shortage. The late 1980's and early 1990's were marred by natural disasters, thus much of the city had to be rebuilt. As of the 2010 census, there were 390,724 Oakland residents.
