In 1803, Thomas Jefferson purchased Omaha as part of the Louisiana Purchase, although for a time only the Indians were settled in this area. William Clark and Meriwether Lewis traveled through this area and reported that this would be a great place to settle, fortify, and use as a trading center. Indeed, fur trade shaped the early development of Omaha.
The Mormons created the first non-Native settlement in Omaha. This colony was used as a resting spot on Western-bound journeys. Due to many negative factors, no one stayed for long. By 1854, the first permanent resident had moved to Omaha and built the first structures and soon the telegraph lines came through the city.
Finally, Omaha's development soared when the transcontinental railroad came through. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln chose Omaha as the eastern terminus. With the rails came immigrants. Many shops sprung up and the main industries were brick manufacturing, breweries, and smelting. Twenty years later came the first cable car systems, John Deere, and McCormick grocery supplier as well as a population boom. This growth continues today. As of the 2010 census, the population numbers 408,958.
