History

In 1838, the U.S. Army built Fort Gatlin south of Orlando Ð then known as Jernigan. Within 2 decades, a few communities had sprung up around the battlement. For some reason, the name was later changed to Orlando, but the true story is unknown.

The Civil War affected the land, but only because the Federal Blockade prevented goods from coming to this southern city. However, in post-War Orlando, things improved, the population grew exponentially, and this area became the center of Florida's citrus industry.

During WWII, a military base was built near Orlando. Some of the personnel stayed after the war to raise their families. This city also became home to commuters who work at Patrick Air Force Base, Cape and Port Canaveral Air Force Station, and Kennedy Space Center.

The most important event that shaped Orlando was the groundbreaking building of Walt Disney World in 1971. This sent the city's economy and population through the roof. A year before Disney World opened, the Orlando International Airport opened, which also helped grow the population. As of 2010, there are 238,300 residents.
