History

Palmdale is located in California's Antelope Valley, and is separated from Los Angeles by the San Gabrielle Mountain Range. It was established as a village during the western expansion by travelers coming out of the American Midwest with a pioneering spirit. After this initial settlement, the population began to dwindle due to a scarcity of water. However, with the completion of the California-Los Angeles Aqueduct in 1913, the community began to grow again. Farming was established, and a road linking Palmdale to Los Angeles was completed. The United States built an Air Force base in the area during World War II. This turned out to be a pivotal moment for Palmdale, whose economy is still grounded in the aerospace industry. Though the aerospace industry is the city's mainstay, other industry corporations and manufacturing firms make the city home as well. The movie industry generates significant revenue for the area and many films are shot in Antelope Valley. Palmdale offers a mall, numerous recreation centers and parks, a public library with two branches, a playhouse, and an art gallery.
