History

Pasadena is a Chippewa Indian name meaning 'of the valley'. The name was chosen because it 'fell pleasantly to the ear,' not because that is where the Chippewa Indians resided. The Tournament of Roses parade began in 1890 to convey the beauty and productivity of the valley. Pasadena is famous for hosting the Rose Bowl football game, which is now linked to the Tournament of Roses parade. Pasadena is also the home of many scientific and cultural institutions. It is the 180th largest city in the U.S., and the ninth largest in Los Angeles County.
